Een nieuwe standaard in beeldkwaliteit
De Full-frame 24,2 MP Exmor R CMOS-beeldsensor is gekoppeld aan een nieuwe, verbeterde BIONZ X-verwerkingssensor en een front-end LSI die de algehele prestaties maximaliseert en resulteert in een verwerkingssnelheid van 1,8 keer sneller dan van de a7 II. Deze krachtige componenten werken samen om de camera in staat te stellen met hogere snelheden te fotograferen en tegelijkertijd een indrukwekkend ISO-bereik van 100 - 51200 (uitbreidbaar tot ISO 50 - 204800 voor stilstaande beelden) en een algehele 1.5-stop verbetering van de beeldkwaliteit mogelijk te maken. De camera beschikt over een breed dynamisch bereik tot 15 stops bij lage gevoeligheid. Daarnaast zijn diverse vernieuwingen toepgast voor een nauwkeurigere kleurreproductie van huidtinten.
De A7 III heeft een 14-bits RAW output zelfs tijdens het fotograferen in de stille of continue modus. Het 5-assig in-body beeldstabilisatiesysteem van de a7 III is afgestemd op de 24.2 MP sensor en is in staat met 5,5 stops te compenseren
Aanzienlijke vooruitgang in AF-snelheid en prestaties
De nieuwe a7 III systeemcamera is uitgerust met snellere AF-prestaties ten opzichte van de a7 II. De nieuwe camera heeft 425 contrast-AF-punten die werken met 693 fasedetectie AF punten. Deze innovatie is overgenomen van het a9-model. Dit AF-systeem dekt ongeveer 93% van het frame, waardoor een betrouwbare scherpstelling en tracking mogelijk is zelfs bij snel bewegende objecten. AF reactie- en trackingsnelheid is sterk verbeterd ten opzichte van de voorganger: bijna 2x de focussnelheid in low-light condities en 2x tracking snelheid gedreven door de uit de snellere sensor read-out. Dit resulteert in een betrouwbaar scherpstelsysteem met uitmuntende precisie en nauwkeurigheid. De veelgeprezen Eye AF-functie is ook beschikbaar in deze nieuwe camera (ook in AF-C modus). De AF optie is uitermate doeltreffend in situaties waarin het model zich omdraait of naar beneden kijkt. Overige verbeteringen op het gebied van focusflexibiliteit zijn de beschikbaarheid van autofocus in de vergrootglasmodus (Focus Magnifier Mode), ondersteuning van Eye AF bij het gebruik van A-mount lenzen, een 'AF On' knop, een multikiezer of 'joystick' voor het snel verplaatsen van focuspunten en flexibele functies voor aanraakscherpstelling.
Snel autofocussysteem en AF/AE-tracking tot wel 10 fps
De vernieuwde beeldprocessor van de a7 III maakt opnamen in 24,2 MP in 10 fps mogelijk en is uitgerust met een nauwkeurige AF/AE-tracking voor maximaal 177 JPEG / RAW-beelden of 89 ongecomprimeerde RAW-beelden. Deze supersnelle 10 fps-modus is beschikbaar met een mechanische sluiter of een volledig geluidloze opname. De camera kan ook continu opnemen met maximaal 8 fps in de Live View-modus met een minimale vertraging in de zoeker of op het lcd-scherm. Dankzij deze supersnelle opties kunnen zelfs snel bewegende onderwerpen en vluchtige momenten nauwkeurig en gedetailleerd worden vastgelegd.
Bij het opslaan van burstbeelden naar de geheugenkaart zijn belangrijke camerafuncties gewoon te bedienen. Gebruikers hebben bijvoorbeeld toegang tot de knoppen 'Fn' (Functie) en 'Menu', fotoweergave en verschillende andere opties, waaronder fotobeoordeling en functies voor het sorteren van beelden op locatie.
Als een opnamelocatie wordt verlicht door Tl-verlichting of ander kunstlicht kan de antiflikkering-functie geactiveerd worden. De a7 III detecteert vervolgens automatisch de frequentie van de verlichting en past de sluitertijd aan.
Hoogwaardige 4K video kwaliteit
De a7 III is uitermate geschikt als videocamera en biedt 4K-video-opnamen (3840 x 2160 pixels) over de hele breedte van de full-frame beeldsensor. Bij opnamen in Super 35 mm gebruikt de camera uitlezing van elke pixel zonder pixelbinding resulterend in 2.4x de data voor 4K beelden. De camera kan dit oversamplen - zodat hoogwaardig 4K-beeldmateriaal met uitzonderlijk veel details en diepte geproduceerd wordt. Het nieuwe HLG-beeldprofiel (Hybrid Log-Gamma) op de a7 III ondersteunt een rechtstreekse HDR-workflow, waardoor HDR (HLG)-compatibele tv's levensechte 4K HDR-beelden kunnen afspelen. Verder zijn zowel S-Log2 en S-Log3 beschikbaar voor meer kleurgradatie. Ook kan de camera Full HD op 120 fps met maximaal 100 Mbps opnemen, waardoor het beeldmateriaal kan worden bewerkt in 4x of 5x slow-motion videobestanden in Full HD-resolutie met AF-tracking.
Verbeterd ontwerp, verbeterde constructie en aanpasbaarheid
De nieuwste full-frame camera van Sony biedt tal van verbeterde functies die als eerste werden toegepast in de a9 en vervolgens in de a7R III, waaronder twee SD-card slots met ondersteuning in één slot voor UHS-II-SD-geheugenkaarten. Gebruikers hebben verschillende mogelijkheden om hun content op te slaan op elk van de kaarten, zoals afzonderlijke JPEG-/RAW-opname, afzonderlijke foto-/filmopnamen, relay-opnamen en meer. De batterijlevensduur is ook aanzienlijk verlengd: met een CIPA-meetresultaat van maximaal 710 opnamen per lading is dit de langstebatterijlevensduur voor elke camera zonder spiegel ter wereld. Dit is gerealiseerd door voor de nieuwe camera gebruik te maken van de NP-FZ100-batterij uit de Z-serie van Sony, die circa 2,2 keer zoveel capaciteit heeft als de batterij NP-FW50 uit de W-serie, die werd toegepast in de a7 II.
De nieuwe camera is voorzien van de functie 'Mijn menu', waarin maximaal 30 menuopties kunnen worden vastgelegd en onmiddellijk worden opgeroepen wanneer ze nodig zijn. Verder kunnen gebruikers met de bedieningselementen van de camera hun foto's beoordelen met sterren, voor eenvoudiger afspelen en beoordelen, en de eerste drie tekens van alle fotobestanden bewerken. Daarnaast heeft de gebruiker de keuze uit in totaal 81 functies die kunnen worden toegewezen aan 11 aanpasbare knoppen, en is de camera stof- en waterbestendig.
De a7 III is voorzien van XGA OLED Tru-Finder met hoge resolutie en hoog contrast met circa 2,3 miljoen dots voor een uiterst nauwkeurige, levensechte reproductie van details. Ook zijn de beeldkwaliteitsinstellingen 'Standaard' en 'Hoog' zowel beschikbaar voor de zoeker als de monitor. Naadloze bestandsoverdracht naar een smartphone, tablet, computer of ftp-server via Wi-Fi® behoort eveneens tot de mogelijkheden, net als het gebruik van de SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.1 Gen 1) USB Type-C™-aansluiting voor extra flexibiliteit qua voeding en voor hogere overdrachtssnelheid als de camera is aangesloten.
Bij model a7 III wordt ook het nieuwe softwarepakket 'Imaging Edge' van Sony geleverd, waarmee de creatieve mogelijkheden van het hele opnameproces — van voorbewerking tot nabewerking — worden uitgebreid. 'Imaging Edge' bestaat uit de drie pc-toepassingen 'Remote', 'Viewer' en 'Edit'. Deze kunnen gratis worden gedownload en bieden ondersteuning voor Live View-opnamen op afstand via uw pc en RAW-ontwikkeling. In de nieuwste versie, 1.1, zijn verschillende verbeteringen doorgevoerd. Zo is de gegevensoverdracht bij een bekabelde aansluiting op een pc 10% sneller en is de reactiesnelheid voor bewerking van RAW-beelden circa 65% hoger. De camera is tevens compatibel met E-mount accessoires van Sony, waaronder de batterijlader BC-QZ1 en de verticale handgreep VG-C3EM.
